Listening — internet-wide voice mining.

Where Account voice (the next docs page) is about one specific company's voice, Listening is about whole-internet voice — find conversations happening at scale around your category, your competitors, your messaging hooks.

Time: 5 min·Updated: 2026-05-25·Audience: marketers, PMMs, founders working on positioning

TL;DR

Track conversations across the public web by topic, keyword set, or competitor name. Sources: podcasts (transcripts) · blogs · X · LinkedIn posts · conference talks · YouTube descriptions. Output: ranked clips with source links, sortable by recency, engagement, or sentiment. Not for outbound — for messaging, positioning, and content research.

01What Listening is

Public-web voice mining. You define a query (topic, keyword set, competitor name, persona); Listening scans 6+ source types and returns ranked excerpts where the query matched.

Different from Account voice: Account voice is "what is this one company saying?" Listening is "what is the internet saying about X?"

02Query types

  • Topic: a category or trend (e.g., "vector databases")
  • Keyword set: a list of related phrases (e.g., ["dbt model failure", "data quality issue", "broken pipeline"])
  • Competitor name: any mention of a competitor in the public web
  • Persona-themed: phrases a specific persona uses (e.g., VP Data complaints, CMO frustrations)

04Output and ranking

Results are ranked excerpts (not full documents). Each excerpt shows: speaker/author, source link, date, context paragraph with your query highlighted, and a sentiment chip.

Default sort: recency × engagement × sentiment relevance. Switch to pure recency for "what's happening now" or to pure engagement for "what's getting talked about."

05Use cases

Messaging research
"How does the market talk about this problem?" Mine real language for your headlines + ads.
Competitor monitoring
"What's [Competitor] being said about?" Track praise + complaints in real time.
Persona vocabulary
"How do VP Data people actually describe their pain?" Use the exact words in cold email subject lines.
Trend detection
"Is the category narrative shifting?" Watch the volume + sentiment over time.

06What Listening is NOT for

  • Outbound targeting. Use Accounts + saved searches + signals for that.
  • Specific-company voice. Use Account voice for one company's surface area.
  • Live monitoring (alert-on-mention). Listening is exploratory; if you want every mention alerted, use Signal rules with a Custom bot.

07Common mistakes

Treating Listening like a Google search
Listening returns excerpts ranked for actionable insight, not a comprehensive crawl. For research-paper-style coverage, use Google. For "what's the conversation," Listening.
Trying to use it for cold targeting
Mentions in podcasts aren't sales signals. Don't reach out to someone because they showed up in a Listening result — there's no consent, no intent, no relationship.
Saving every interesting clip
Use the export to a research doc. Saving 200 clips inside Mama clutters the UI; export them once and work in your doc tool.
