Upsell vs. cross-sell

Upsell = same product, higher tier or more usage (more seats, more storage, premium plan). Cross-sell = different product from your portfolio (add the analytics module to the core platform). Both count as expansion revenue, but they're sold differently and require different account-team capabilities. Upsell is usually CSM-led; cross-sell is usually AE-led.

01Definition

TLDR
Upsell = same product, higher tier or more usage (more seats, more storage, premium plan). Cross-sell = different product from your portfolio (add the analytics module to the core platform). Both count as expansion revenue, but they're sold differently and require different account-team capabilities. Upsell is usually CSM-led; cross-sell is usually AE-led.

02Why it matters

Getting the motion right is operationally consequential — CSM-led upsell + AE-led cross-sell is the modern playbook.

03Example

Worked example
Upsell: Acme adds 30 more seats to their existing Pro plan. Cross-sell: Acme adds the analytics add-on to their existing Pro plan.
